Exodus Flashcards
What are two ways in which gods promise give Abraham and Sarah descendants is fulfilled in exodus?
Israel multiplies into a great nation,
God helps Israel leave Egypt to travel to the promise land,
God reveals the divine name: Yahweh
Why is exodus the heart of the Old Testament??
Without exodus the Old Testament would collapse just like the New Testament would collapse without the four gospels
What is the primary task God gives the people?
They are to live a new life guided by the Torah, or law, that God gives them on mount Sinai
The book of exodus contains a variety of writing styles. List and briefly describe three of these.
Lots of dialogue- especially between Moses and God,
Action Language- especially when God and pharaoh are locked in a battle of wills,
Legal language to explain the laws that God wants Israel to follow,
Poetry for passages that describe God greatness and mystery,
Technical language to explain how God wants the tabernacle to be built.
Explain why the book of exodus really begins with the last few chapters of genisis
Jacobs children have had lots of kids (exodus 1:7) in keeping with gods command, on genesis, “be fruitful and multiply”
Explain how the book of exodus is linked to an already-existing covenant
God remembers the covenant made with Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, and Jacob and lean/Rachel when God decides to free Israel from slavery to pharaoh
Explain how, in exodus, the people of Israel shift from master to master and from building to building
They become servants of God instead of slaves of pharaoh. They build a tabernacle for God instead of doing forced labour as builders for pharaoh.
Explain with reference to pharaoh encounter with the midwives, how exodus reduces details to an absolute minimum.
The soil reduces details and absolute minimum. The text only mentions to midwives, although there must be many more to serve thousands of them and giving birth. The text also doesn’t explain why the all-powerful Pharaoh would be talking to a pair of lowly Jewish midwives.
Explain in two or three sentence how the author of exodus skillfully writes for both the first time and returning reader
The first time reader follows The author as unfolds the story step-by-step. The I also knows that many will be re-reading the story and constructs the narrative to make it entertaining for them for example having pharaoh made a fool of by the midwives.
Be able to explain how pharaoh is like many dictators today.
He does evil in secret at first. Then he goes public in his abuse of power by ordering the baby boys thrown into the Nile.
Knowing why it’s ironic that Moses is placed in the basket in the Nile River.
Moses, in his basket, is placed in the same Nile River that is used to drown Hebrew baby boys
Why is it ironic that pharaohs daughters saved Moses
She doesn’t support her father’s policy of genocide against the Hebrew people
Knows the meaning and the significance of the word tebah
God will protect Moes in the little baby Arc for the sick of Israel’s future just to see protected know what it is big grown-up ark. Short-term it means arc
