Exhaust, Cooling, Lube, and Ventilation Module Flashcards
The purpose of an exhaust manifold is to;
Collect the exhaust gas
When testing back pressure in an exhaust system, what would be the normal pressure reading for a good exhaust system with the engine operating at 1800 rpm?
1 psi
How would you determine if a catalytic converter is functioning correctly?
Using temp gauge, the temp at the outlet of the converter should be 38C(100F) greater than the temp at the inlet of converter.
What is the main function of a cooling system?
The main function of the cooling system is to regulate the engine temperature.
What is the most common type of thermostat?
Wax-Pellet
3 types of cooling systems are;
Air-Cooled
Open loop liquid cooled
Closed loop liquid cooled
What are the 2 popular coolant products? and Which is safer for the environment?
Ethylene glycol
Propylene glycol - not toxic, or as hazardous to the environment
What is the function of a radiator cap?
Rad Caps purpose is to raise the pressure above atmospheric pressure in the cooling system. This increase raises the boiling point temperature of the coolant.
2 possible results from a coolant leak into the engine and lube system are;
-If coolant gets into the cylinder, hydraulic lock can lead to serious damage of piston, con-rod, and cylinder head
-If coolant mixes with oil, bearings and components are damaged
5 functions of the lube system;
-Reduce friction
-cools
-seals
-cleans
-absorbs loads?
What are the 3 methods of lubrication?
Splash
Splash/Pressure
Full Pressure
What designs of pumps are used in the engines main lubrication system?
Positive displacement rotary pumps
2 oil filtration systems are;
-full flow
-bypass
What’s the purpose of a pre-lube pump?
To get oil to critical components and lubricate them before engine is turned over.
What’s the purpose of a post-lube pump?
Runs after shutdown, used to cool engine + components, to lubricate turbo bearings as turbo winds down.
