What is the criteria for the mets staging?
Can do the specified activity without getting breathless
More severe the lower the met score
The higher the met score the better their cardiac/resp system so they are usually easier to anaesthetise

Do either strenuous exercise or heavy physical work

Run a short distance

Play golf, mountain walk, dance or any form of exercise

Walk on the flat at brisk pace
METS 5
Climb a flight of stairs or walk up a hill

Walk 100-200 metres on the flat

What are reasons to intubate a patient whilst they are under anaesthetic?
Protection from aspiration- e.g. for those who haven’t fasted
Need for muscle relaxation
Shared airway- surgeons an anaethetists working in same area
Need for tight CO2 control
Minimal access to patient during surgery
What is spontaneous ventilation?
Patient breaths themselves
What is controlled ventilation?
Patient paralysed so their breathing is completely taken over by anaethetist
What is supported ventilation?
Mixture of spontaneous and controlled ventilation
Patient breathes but anaethetist does some of the work.
