Exercise (L37) Flashcards
What is phosphocreatine?
Fast onsite fuel
- high energy phosphate compound
- provides enough energy for 100m sprint
Under what circumstances is it used?
anaerobic
What enzyme is involved in phosphocreatine breakdown?
Creatine kinase: takes phosphate and gives it to ADP => ATP
What is the role of phosphocreatine in muscles?
Provides initial burst of energy
How is it used and regenerated?
Phosphate group cleaved from phosphocreatine, added to ADP by Creatine kinase enzyme. Reverse processes for regeneration
How are glycogen stores mobilised?
Mobilised to G1P by glycogen phosphorylase -> G6P -> fuel for anaerobic glycolysis
What enzyme stimulates muscle glycogen breakdown? What is the mechanism (receptor stuff)?
Adrenaline
When adrenaline binds to beta adrenergic receptors on muscle cells binds, GTP used and G protein released from GPCR and can move to adenylate cyclase to make cAMP
- GTP released and regenerated
- cAMP builds up -> signal amplifies through rest of pathway = lots of glucose quickly
