Q

what is done when instructing a client?

A

Feature, benefit, feel (FBF) The aim of this approach is to continuously link what a client is doing to their pay-offs for doing it. Very motivational. Feel good after achieving result.

Q

Show:

A

When teaching an exercise you first show the client one. Keep it simple. “okay Joe, ill just get you to watch me do one then we’ll get you started”
explain how to do correctly , and this is where we start and this is where we stop. This is the pace we go. Do 4-5 reps so they learn from body movement.

16
Q

Tell:

A

Get the client into the machine and ask them to get into start position. Help with set up and explain anything they don’t do automatically.
-Important to make sure start position is correct as it will help to complete the movement well.

17
Q

Do:

A

Ask the client to do the exercise at the same tempo you did.

  • Count the tempo if necessary.
  • cueing movement can be done physically as the client can’t see themselves “can yo move x to y etc”
  • cue breathing, they should be breathing on the concentric phase and inhale during the eccentric phase., do not gold breath at any stage.
  • repeat until you have it exactly how you want it to look. can take 2-3 sets
  • Ask questions of your client so they start to focus on the feel whilst moving. This triggers peripheral nervous system and creates sensory connections between the brain and the muscles that are working. this is called proprioception. only do this if they have the movement. Otherwise the nervous system beds down an incorrect movement pattern
18
Q

commend:

A

tell the client something they are doing well

19
Q

recommend:

A

ask the client to change something using a physical cue or by reminding them to concentrate on technique

20
Q

commend:

A

tell the client something they are doing well that relates to the improvement made in their technique.

21
Q

questioning:

A

After exercise, ask them about the exercise, key points, benefits and things to watch for. Doing this keeps the client focused and makes them realise there will be questions each time, so they should listen. “can you tell me the main form points to remember”
client who isn’t hold accountable may train poorly and therefore risk not getting results

22
Q

remind:

A

cue them on any points they missed that you think are vital for them. Don’t re instruct, just make sure the one or two things that you know will make them a success are there. If they nail a question congratulate them and move on.

23
Q

summarise:

A

Quickly summarise the exercise “feature, benefit, feel” of the exercise again and the key technique points.

  • Ask “how do you feel about this exercise?” ask about fee not the understanding.
  • want to know about fear or anxiety
  • the key to building confidence to they can become competent through perseverance. be positive and encouraging.
24
Q

Make notes:

A

Make comments on the programme to summarise key points in your discussion so they can read them later. should be simple, direct, and use phrases such as “steady pace, pause each time” or “smooth and full movement” or “bar to chest not neck” No essays. If you have long notes book session to teach them again

25
Q

important

A

the only way to get perfect movement consistently is to instruct it well initially and have the client feel the movement and get their brain to program it in.
perfect reps, often and early on are required.
