Exercise 6 Flashcards
What is Epethelial tissue?
-Covers a body surface or lines a body cavity.
-Protect, absorb, filtrate, excrete, secrete, and in sensory information.
What is Connective Tissue
-The most abundant tissue type in the body.
-Protect, support, insulate and bind body tissues.
What is Muscle Tissue
-All body flesh, heart, and the walls of hollow
organs
-Highly specialized to contract and produce most
types of body movement.
What is Nervous Tissue
-CNS (brain and spinal cord), and PNS (nervous
elements outside the CNS
-Receive stimuli, and generate electrical signals
Distinguishing Characteristics of Epethelia tissue
Polarity (the two sides are different; not a difference
in electrical charge)
● Specialized connections keeping cells tightly
together
● Supported by connective tissue: reticular lamina
● Avascular but Innervated
● Regenerative Ability
Types of epithelium and how to classify
them
- Arrangement - # of layers
● Simple – 1 layer
● Stratified – more than 1 layer
Epithelial Tissue
● 2. Cell Shape
● Squamous
● Cuboidal
● Longitudinal
Distinguishing Characteristics of Connective tissue
Common origin – all derived from embryonic tissue
● Degrees of vascularity – highly vascular with two
exceptions:
● Cartilage is Avascular
● Dense connective tissue is poorly vascularized
● Extracellular matrix – cells are spaced apart, and
there is lots of matrix in between.
● Ground Substance
● Fibers
● Collagen
● Reticular
● elastic
4 Types of Connective Tissue
Connective Tissue Proper
● Loose Connective tissue
● Dense Connective tissue
Connective
Tissue
● Cartilage
● Hyaline
● Elastic
● Fibro-
● Bone
3 Distinct types of muscle tissue
- Multi-nucleate
- No Striations
- Intercalated discs
