Exercise 5 Flashcards
What is cartilage?
A dense but flexible connective tissue. Provides shape and structural support, shock absorption, and resistance.
Where is dense irregular connective tissue found?
The dermis of the skin and the sclera of the eye.

What is adipose tissue?
A delicate connective tissue that contains very little collagen and matrix. Cushions and insulates the body and organs.
What is fibrous cartilage?
Cartilage with a greater concentration of collagen which is stronger than hyaline cartilage and found in places where hyaline cartilage is not strong enough to withstand the friction and forces on the joint.
What is hyaline cartilage?
Articular cartilage. Contains large groups of chondrocytes and lots of ground substance.
What is specialized connective tissue?
Tissues that have a unique anatomy and very specific functions.

What is the major difference between epithelial and connective tissue?
Connective tissues contain cells and an extracellular matrix while epithelial tissue does not have an extracellular matrix.
Osteo-
Bone
What is the function of elastic protein fiber?
Provides elasticity, both stretch and recoil, and resilience to tissues and organs,
What is areolar connective tissue?
Contains a loose array of collagen, reticulin, and elastin in the matrix. Having all three protein fibers allows for the tissue to keep structures in place.
What is bone?
Dense connective tissue that serves as the body’s internal rigid structure.

What is blood?
A fluid connective tissue with a fluid matrix.
What composes adipose tissue?

What does it mean when cells have the suffix -cyte?
They maintain the matrix.
What is the function of reticular protein fiber?
Provides a framework for cells to adhere to and creating a structural support system within organs.

What is the extracellular matrix made of?
Organic and inorganic components.
What is the organic portion of the extracellular matrix?
Protein Fibers
What is dense irregular connective tissue?
Tissue with collagen fibers arranged in nonparallel directions. This tissue is strong in all directions.
What does it mean when cells have the suffix -clast
They break down the matrix.

What is elastic cartilage?
Cartilage that contains both elastin and collagen and is more flexible than hyaline cartilage. Groups of chondrocytes surrounded by elastic protein fibers.
What is the function of collagenous protein fiber?
Adds strength to connective tissue and allows for structural support throughout the body, thus allowing us to move.
What surrounds the cartilage?
A dense irregular tissue membrane called the perichondrium.
Myelo-
Spinal Cord
What is elastic connective tissue?
Connective tissue made of mostly elastin and a small amount of collagen. This tissue is very strong and also elastic. Allows for variation while still having strength.

Where is reticular connective tissue found?
Lymph nodes, spleen and bone marrow.

Where is areolar connective tissue found?
Under the skin, between the muscle layers, and around organs, blood vessels, and nerves
What is reticular connective tissue?
Delicate tissue composed mainly reticulin. It serves as a structural framework for soft organs.
What does it mean when cells have the suffix -blast?
They build the matrix.
-let

What is the fluid of blood?
Plasma.
What is the inorganic portion of the extracellular matrix?
Ground substance
How do the prefixes of cell names affect the meaning?
The prefix determines that cells specific function.
What is dense regular connective tissue?
Tissue with collagen fibers arranged in a parallel fashion. The tissue is extremely strong, but only in the direction they run in. Can easily fray.

Where is elastic connective tissue found?
Large arteries
