Appointment powers
Pres appoints ambassadors, SC judges and other not provided for.
Needs senate consent.
Cabinet members can be rejected by.
Congress delegates inferior officers to president.
Pres must appoint to administrative agencies.
Removal power
Pres can remove executive appointee without cause.
* But must have good cause to remove officials with fixed terms and judges.
Pardon power
Pres can pardon anyone for federal crime except impeachment.
Veto power
Pres has 10 days to act on passed legislation. If he does not veto, the law passes.
Both houses can vote 2/3 to override a veto.
Executive privilege
Military info and communications within the executive are privileged.
Pres war powers
Power to deploy forces in response to attack on US.
Can seize private property during war.
* But can’t declare war.
Treaty powers
Can make treaties with Senate consent.
Executive agreements
Pres has sole authority to enter into executive agreements with foreign nations. No congress input needed.
Prevail over state law, but not federal law.
Fed Govt Immunity
Immune from suit by private persons or states unless they permit it.
Immune from state taxes and regulation.
State can’t regulate activities of federal officials.
