An order to delay a person’s punishment until a higher court can hear the case
Reprieve
A pardon to a group of people
Amnesty
A nation’s overall planning for dealing w/other nations
Foreign policy
A formal agreement between the governments of two or more countries
Treaty
An agreement between the president and the leader of another country
Executive agreement
A rule or command that has the force of law
Executive order
An effort to punish other nations imposing trade barriers
Trade sanction
An agreement among a group of nations that prohibits them all from trading w/a target nation
Embargo
A group of advisors to the president that includes the head of 15 top level executive departments
Cabinet
The collective agencies and employees of the executive branch
Federal bureaucracy
Federal board or commission that is not part of any cabinet department
Independent agency
A business owned and operated by the federal gov’t
Government corporation
A person appointed to a federal position by the president
Political appointee
Hiring people into gov’t jobs on the basis of their qualifications
Merit system
Excessive bureaucracy; series of complicated tasks that seem unecessary
Red tape
Practice of spying or using spies, typically by governments, to obtain political and military info
Espionage
Organization created by the gov’t w/the purpose of enforcing specific regulations on a certain part of the economy
Regulatory commission
Official document issued by a gov’t certifying the hold identity and citizenship and entitleing them to travel to and form foreign countries
Passport
An independent agency setup to deal w/specialized areas of gov’t

Group of people named by each state legislature to select the president and VP
