What are the different types of veto powers of the governor?
Line-Item – Only applies to spending measures
Full Veto – Completely veto a bill
Time Veto - If a Bill comes to Governor within 10 days of Legislature adjourning, the governor has 20 days to veto it.
How can the legislature overturn a veto by the governor?
By a 2/3rds vote in both chambers.
Who can call special sessions of the legislature?
Only the governor.
How long are special sessions in the legislature held for?
30 days at a time, but there can be an unlimited amount of them.
Who sets the agenda for special legislative sessions?
The agenda for special sessions is set by the same person who calls them, the governor.
Who is the senior official in charge of conduct for elections in Texas?
The Secretary of State is the chief election officer for the State of Texas.
What is the constitutional method for removing the Governor?
Article 15 of the state constitution. Impeachment. Power to impeach given to House of Representatives. Tried by Senate.
What is the Plural Executive?
It’s a model of state government whereby elected state officials have different powers. (eg: board of directors)
Who are members of the plural executive accountable to?
The electorate.
What does the State Board of Education do?
The State Board of Education (SBOE) sets policies and standards for Texas public schools. Primary responsibilities:
Setting curriculum standards
Reviewing and adopting instructional materials
Establishing graduation requirements
Overseeing the Texas Permanent School Fund
What is the S.A.C?
Sunset Advisory Commission.
