Electoral College
- Formal method of electing the president
- The popular vote in each state determines how the electoral votes of that state will be cast
- Each state gets the # of votes equal to the number of senators and representatives in congress
Executive Agreement
- An executive agreement is a pact between the president and the head of a foreign state
- Most agree with legislative already passed by congress
- President can make agreements without congressional approval
Cabinet/Executive Departments
- Much of the work of the Executive branch is done by the executive department
- Cabinet role varies and is dependent up the president’s use of it
Treaty
- A treaty is a formal agreement between two or more sovereign state
- President only has the power to negotiate the terms of the treaty
- Senate must approve the treaties
Presidential Succession Act of 1947
- Scheme by which a presidential vacancy is filled
- Vice president takes over office upon the death, resignation, or removal of the president
- Made the order of succession
Twentieth Amendment
- A “lame Duck” president is one who is completing a term of office and chooses not to run for re-electing or is ineligible to run for re-election
- inauguration day is was moved from March 4th to January 20th
Twenty Second Amendment
Limits the number of terms to 2 or maximum of 10 years
What are the qualifications of the President?
- Article 2 section 1 clause 5
- Natural born citizen of the US
- Born in the US or on US soil
- One or both parents are US citizens
- At Least 35 years old and
- resident of the US 14 years

In article 2 section 1 and 2 outlines the executive branch
What are the eight roles of the President?
1: Executive: granted executive power
2: State:Ceremonial head of gov.Rep of people
3: Administrator: Director of the executive branch. Head of the largest govt in the world
4: Diplomat: Nations chief spokesperson to the rest of the world. Essential figure in shaping american foreign policy
5: Commander: supreme commander of all the nations armed forces. In immediate and direct control of the nation’s military arsenal
6: Legislator: Sets the overall shape of the congressional agenda. Initiates, suggests and requests much of congress’s major legislation. Signs bill into law
7: Party: Leader of his political party
8: Citizen: Expected to be “representative of the American People” Expected work for and represent the public interest

The role varies and is dependent upon the President’s use of it
Eisenhower & George H W Bush both extensively used their cabinet
Jackson & Roosevelt largely ignored their cabinets
