Excretory System Flashcards
1
Q
Functions
A
- eliminate waste
- regulate blood flow/pressure
- regulate blood pH
- balance body fluids
- produce urine
- regulate the concentration of certain solutes in the blood
2
Q
Organs involved
A
- Skin
- Lungs
- Liver
- Kidneys
- Ureters
- Urinary bladder
- Urethra
3
Q
Skin
A
- Removes extra water, salts, and urea in sweat
- Sweat released which helps keep body temperature constant
4
Q
Lungs
A
- Blood transports Co2 from body to the lungs (cellular respiration)
- When you exhale, water vapor and Co2 are released
- Regulating Co2 levels is important
5
Q
Liver
A
- Converts toxic nitrogen-based waste (made through protein breakdown) into urea (less toxic compound)
- Urea is transported to blood via circulatory system and sent to kidneys for elimination
6
Q
Kidneys
A
- A pair of fist sized, bean shaped organs
- Filter out waste, extra water, urea, salt, and metabolic waste from blood
- Nephrons (1 million per kidney) that absorbed valuable substances and get rid of waste
7
Q
Ureters
A
Pair of tubes that transport urine from kidney to urinary bladder
8
Q
Urinary bladder
A
Stores urine until it is released via urethra
9
Q
Urethra
A
Empties bladder, releases urine outside of the body
10
Q
Homeostasis
A
- Nitrogenous waste (ammonia/urea) come from digestion and have to be removed regularly
- Kidneys control sodium levels by removing and reabsorbing sodium ions - helps control osmotic pressure
- Kidneys regulate pH by filtering out hydrogen ions and allowing bicarbonate to be reabsorbed into blood
- Glucose is a sugar not usually filter out (ppl with diabetes have too much glucose)
