Excretion Test Flashcards
How is Carbon Dioxide produced? (Metabolic waste)
Co2 is produced in the body during cellular respiration which is the break down of glucose in cells to create ATP.
How is Water produced? (Metabolic waste)
Water vapor is produced by cellular respiration (breakdown of glucose in cells to create ATP) and is discarded when we exhale.
How is Ammonia produced? (Metabolic waste)
Amino acids are produced and broken down in the liver, here is where ammonia is found.
How is Urea produced? (Metabolic waste)
Ammonia is shifted to be urea in the liver which is less harmful and can transport excessive nitrogen.
How are Mineral Salts produced? (Metabolic waste)
Body produces mineral salts from breaking down food and absorbing water in the digestive system.
Skin, Lungs, Kidneys, and the Large Intestine are the major what?
The four major excretory organs
What do the Lungs excrete?
Carbon Dioxide and Water Vapor
What does the skin excrete?
Excess water, excess salts, and urea
What do the Kidneys excrete?
Water and some salts
Why is the liver not considered an excretory system?
Its a site of metabolic waste production which is not considered excretion.
What is the function of the Kidney?
The kidney filters blood to remove waste, and extra water, and produce urine.
What is the function of the Renal Artery?
A large blood vessel branches into smaller vessels until the blood reaches the nephrons. Blood flows into the kidney through this artery.
What is the function of the Renal Vein?
Cleansed blood goes into this vein carrying blood from the kidneys and back to the heart. From the heart, the cleansed blood will recirculate through the body.
What is the function of the Renal Medulla?
The inner part of the kidney has a “stripped” appearance because it contains microscopic coiled tubules called nephrons.
What is the function of the Renal Pelvis?
The Renal Pelvis collects the urine that was produced in the kidneys and leads it out through a central “stem” called the ureter.
