Excerise 6 Flashcards
What are the 2 major categories in bacteria ?
Gram positive and gram negative
What is it called to distinguish two groups of bacteria?
A differential stain
What is gram positive bacteria? (4)
Thick, single layered cell wall
Made of peptidoglycan
Purple
What is gram negative ? (4)
Multilayered cell wall
Thin layer of peptidoglycan
Surrounded by a LPS outer membrane
Pink
What does LPS mean for gram - ?
Lipopolysaccharide containing outer membrane
What are the 3 dyes?
Crystal violet
Iodine
Safranin
What’s the 1 decolorizer?
Ethanol
What are the 4 steps of a gram stain?
Crystal violet ( purple dye)
Iodine ( brown color )
Ethanol ( 95% alcohol )
Safranin ( red )
What does the 95 ethanol do to a gram negative bacteria?
They lose the bluish purple color and become decolorized
Some gram positive bacteria, may lose their characteristic in older cultures and appear gram negative? What bacteria?
Bacillus
What is gram variability?
Identification criterion that more needs to be done to figure out what bacteria it is
What is micrococcus luteus?
Gram positive coccus
What is Escherichia coli?
Gram negative rod
What is staphylococcus?
Gram positive gram coccus
Streptobacillus?
Gram negative rods
