Exceretory System Review Flashcards
What is the purpose of the excretory system?
Remove metabolic waste from the blood. excrete the waste from the body.
What are the three major organs of the excretory system?
Lungs - remove CO2
Liver – removes bile pigments, removes lactic acid (from anaerobic cellular respiration), also eliminates toxins such as alcohol
Kidneys - remove ammonia, urea and uric acid from the blood
What wastes do kidneys removed from the body? What is the kidneys other major role in the body?
Kidneys also maintained the water bones in the blood. Kidneys removed ammonia, urea and uric acid from the blood
What are the four major organs of the urinary system? State the function of each
Kidneys which produce urine
Ureters which transport urine
Urinary bladder which stores urine
Urethra which excretes urine
The three regions of the kidney?
Renal cortex which is the outer layer
Renal medulla which is the inner layer
Renal pelvis which is a hollow centre, where the kidneys join the ureter
What are the nephrons? Where are they related?
Nephrons are the functional unit of the kidneys - where blood is filtered
Each kidney contains 1 million nephrons
What Is the pathway that blood takes as it enters a nephron?
Renal artery
What is the major function of the glomerulus? Bowmans capsule? Collecting duct?
Glomerulus – high-pressure capillary bed - site of blood filtration
Bowmans capsule – cup like structure that surrounds the glomerulus
Collecting duct – collects the urine and carries it to the renal pelvis
What are the three steps Of your information?
Filtration, reabsorption, secretion
What direction do materials that are reabsorbed travel?
Nutrients are actively transported, water and negatively charged ions are passively transported
What what direction do materials are secreted travel?
active transport, occurs in the distal tubule, some in the proximal tubule
What is the pathway that urine takes through the excretory system?
From the kidneys to the ureters to the urinary bladder and then the urethra
