DSN
Data Source Names- connect to external data sources
- A text file that defines how to connect to an external data source.
- It is listed in the Choose Data Source dialog box.
MS Query
- Retrieve just the desired columns and rows
- Retrieve data from multiple tables (or files),
- Filter data at data source before returning the data to Excel
- Access to a greater number of database functions
Steps to Use MS Query
1) Create a new Data Source Name (DSN) or use an existing one
2) Use Query Wizard to pull data into Excel
or

When creating an Excel report to access an external data source- Information
- The data connection information is stored in the Excel report
- A copy of the connection information is saved as a separate Data Source Name (DSN) file in a special folder.
If the data source changes
Your Excel report can be refreshed to get the most updated data from the data source.
