Q

How do you carry out a respiratory exam?

A

45%

Inspect the chest wall for equal movement, depth and rate of breathing and for any deformity

  • Examine from the end of the bed and the side of the bed
  • Feel pulse whilst counting respiratory rate and tell the patient that is what you are doing
  • Report the respiratory rate to demonstrate that they have counted correctly

Palpate to assess chest expansion
- Hand around chest front and back

Percuss anterior and posterior chest wall, three zones in sequence to detect resonance over the lungs
- Fingers parallel to ribs, 4 times on the anterior chest wall, 3 on the posterior wall

Auscultate anterior and posterior chest wall in the same zones as percussion in sequence, alternating left to right, to detect breath sound
- Should also listen over the apex of the lung above the clavicle on both sides
