Holiness, then, cannot be reduced to an ethical ideal or identified simply with
an impersonal, divine force. It is something that is ascribed absolutely to God
but, in varying degrees, to humans as well. It is in this sense a shared quality
having to do with separation—in the case of Israel, separated
