Countries in Great Britain
England Scotland Wales
Countries in United Kingdom 🇬🇧
England, Wales, Scotland Northern Ireland
Capital cities in Uk
London, Belfast, Cardiff Edinburgh
Islands in Uk
Isle of Man, Orkney islands, Hebrides
Major cities in Uk
Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham, Leicester, Bristol
What are spot heights
Shown as a black dot with a number next to it on a map showing the exact height of a point on the map
What is Layer contouring
Areas of height are shown as bands of different colours there is always a key to show the height
What are Contours
They are lines drawn on a map joining places with the same height, most have their height marked on
What is transpiration
Transfer of water from plants into water vapour in the air
What is surface runoff/water
Transfer of water to sea over ground surface
What is Ground water
Transfer of water through the ground back to sea
What is the watershed
An area of highland forming the edge of a river basin
What is to river basin
An area of land drained by a river and its tributaries
What is the mouth
Where a river flows into a lake or sea
What is the source
Where the river begins
What is the channel
Where the river flows
What is the confluence
The point where two rivers meet
What is a tributary
A stream or small river flowing into a main river
What is erosion
The wearing away of rocks stones and soil
What is deposition
Deposition is the dropping of material when the river loses its energy after reaching flatter ground. It deposits the largest stones first followed by the smaller ones
What is transportation
Transportation is the movement of material, the more energy a river has, the larger the load it can carry
What is a waterfall
A steep fall of a river
What is hard rock
The layer of rock on top of soft rock in the waterfall
What is the plunge pool
The area where the water from the waterfall falls
What is an overhang
An overhang is when the soft rock gets eroded leaving an overhang of hard rock in a waterfall
What is a meander
A large curve or bend in a river
Where is the fast flow in a meander
The fast flow is on the outside bend where erosion occurs and in the deep channel
Where is the slow flow in a meander
The slow flow is in the inside Ben near the small beach and in the shallow channel
What and where is our case study
It’s the Australia 2010/11 floods in Queensland (north west of Australia)
What is the watershed
An area of highland forming the edge of a river basin

An area of land drained by a river and its tributaries

The slow flow is in the inside Ben near the small beach and in the shallow channel
What and where is our case study
It’s the Australia 2010/11 floods in Queensland (north east of Australia)
What is Hydraulic action
The sheer force of water breaking the cliff face
What is Attrition
When the rocks collide with each other getting smaller
What is abrasion
When the rocks get carried by the water and they act like sandpaper wearing away the cliff
What is corrosion
The chemical reaction between the sea and some rock types
What is a beach
An area of sand, shingle or rock along a coast
What is a spit
An extended stretch of beach stretching out to the sea and is joined to the mainland at one end
What is a bar
When a spit joins one part of the main land to another
What is The Holderness coast
Our erosion case study in Yorkshire where there is a lot of erosion along the coast
Why is the Holderness coast vulnerable
The coast is made of softer Boulder clay which is easily eroded
The beaches are narrow providing less protection from waves
The coastal defences are further north making waves travel south to the coast
Effects of Holderness coat erosion
Gas terminal at risk Businesses at risk People will loose their jobs Houses at risk of collapsing Property prices have plummeted 80,000m2 of farm land is lost every year
What is suspension
Finer sand particles carried along with the flow of the river
TIP💡 SUSpension Susan is a fine pensioner who gets carried
What is Traction
Large boulders rolled along the river bed
TIP💡think of TRACTion in traction as a tractor, tractors are big and roll and long the floor
What is saltation
Smaller pebbles are bounced along the river bed
TIP💡SALTation salt is small and bounces along the floor
What is solution
Minerals dissolved in the water
What are the 6 oceans
Arctic Ocean North Atlantic Ocean Pacific Ocean Indian Ocean South Atlantic Ocean Southern ocean
What are the 7 continents
Europe North America South America Africa Asia Australasia Antarctica
Where are rainforests normally found
Near the equator
What sort of weather do rainforests have
Rainy and high temperatures 🌦☀️🌧
In which mountains is the source of the River Amazon
The Andes
Name the layers of the rainforest
Emergents, canopy, under storey/canopy and forest floor
Name the two features of the rainforest
Vines/lianas/canopy and buttress roots
How are drip tip leaves adapted
The tip and waxy surfaces let the rain drip off so it doesn’t damage the leaf
