Exam Studying Flashcards
Winston Churchill.
DId shit was the first president that was part of the Cold War. The birth of the Soviet Union after WW2.
George Kennan Reflects alarm in what thing. What did it talk about?
The long telegram. Talks about proposed steps to contains the Soviet Union
The Truman Doctrine
From President Truman to scare the hell out of the Americans about the Soviet Union
The Marshall Plan
Officially the European Recovery Program because everything was fucked over there still from WW2. The US gave over 110 Bill in economic assistance to help rebuild Western European economies after WW2. Was named after George Marshall
Soviets and China
Soviets provided support to the communist China since 1920. With Mao’s win. Other European countries wanted to join suit. Especially North Korea!
North Korean Leader (This one should be easy). What did he want to do
Kim II Sung… conquer his side bitch the south
Iranian Prime Minister Mossadeq why does he matter?
He was interested in nationalism since people were using his oil and he didn’t like that. Wasn’t actually communist tho
Nikita Khruschev. Basically leader after Stalin why he matter?
He didn’t like Stalin’s way of doing stuff. Khruschev visited the US and loved da 🌽. Did see some improvement. Him and Eisenhower saw the power of nukes and then was like okay we’re gonna limit testing. Also when U-2 happened. Soviet’s were like “wtf” and US was like that wasn’t us. And then they all just split up cuz US wasn’t playing fair.. No Detente.
The kitchen debate what happened?
American exhibition opened in the Soviet Union. US brought a bunch of household appliances to say, “Ha our shit is cooler than yours because we have a market economy”.
Bay of the pigs What happened?
Failed military attack from the CIA to over through the groaning communist government in Cuba. They lost pretty badly. Gave Khruschev the opportunity to give missile to Cuba for “defense” lead to Cuban missile crisis.
Vietnam war… well this is a lot.. Why was it important for the US and USSR?
The north was communist and wanted the south. The US wanted the south to do well cuz they were democratic. Shit hit the fan when all the Vietnamese wanted the French out of their country. Thought that the spread of communism in Asia would start there if they failed.
Henry Kissinger. Who is he? Why he important
Henry was Nixon’s security advisor and was a contributor to the detente since he realized that most of their allies in Europe would need to do a lot of their own protecting.
Brezhnez Doctrine. Why u important
After Khrushchev left office, Brezhnez ensured that soviets have the right to intervene with affairs in other Soviet bloc countries. To contribute to economic stability and shit like that
Things the Detente did well
SALT 1 -> limit number of ICBMs
ABM -> Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty
Both made more reductions in weapons later.
Best achievement was the Helsinki Accords -> Committed East European countries, US and USSR to honour post war borders, promote cooperation and human rights (USSR wasn’t big on the last one)
Thing Detente Sucked at
USSR caught up in fire power in someways. Now more of a threat. Soviets just kind of waltzed into Afghanistan to ensure communism and millions died.
