Exam Study Guide Flashcards
Is there a particular order for the steps?
Yes
What are the different steps of scientific method?
Observation questions, hypothesis, theory, modify or accept
How does a hypothesis become a theory?
When a hypothesis remains accepted after numerous test are done over a long period of time
How is a scientific statement valid?
Data sampling, peer review publication, media, author’s credentials
What is primary wave? How is it different?
Squeezes and stretches material in the same direction the wave moves; travel through ALL material
What is secondary wave? How is it different?
Twists material at right angle direction a wave moves; travel ONLY through solids
Why do we now have a worldwide seismic network?
To keep an eye out for atomic bomb test explosion
What is the core made of?
Metal
Define the crust.
Outermost, rocky layer
Define the mantle.
Brings internal heat up to the surface
Define inner core.
Solid: extremely high pressure
Define outer core.
Molten: slightly low pressure
Shadow Zones
Appear when seismic waves are refracted or absorbed by a layer
S-Wave Shadow Zone
Absorbed by Earth’s outer core
P-Wave Shadow Zone
Refracted by core
What is plate tectonic theory?
Outer rigid layer of the earth that is divided into a couple dozen plates that moves the earth’s surface
Divergent
Moving away from one another
Convergent
Moving towards one another
Transform
Slides pass one another
What are the six (6) different plate tectonic zones?
Spreading, rift, ocean-ocean subduction, ocean-continental subduction, collision, transform
What is the scientific method?
The process of inquiry that examines and explains a problem or phenomenon
