Exam signs Flashcards
Visible blood
Volume of blood loss, type of blood (for example fresh PR bleeding vs Maleana)
Stoma bag (+/- blood)
Recent surgery, cancer
Pallor
Significant bleed
Bruising
Patient may be on anticoagulation
Patient visibly in pain
Severity/source (epigastric tenderness is common in conditions like PUD/esophagitis)
Flapping tremor
Hepatic encephalopathy (Patients are usually unwell and confused by the time this sign becomes apparent)
Clubbing
Chronic liver disease, Coeliac Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Leukonychia (white lines in image)
Hypoalbuminemia in liver disease
Koilonychia (spooning)
Chronic anaemia (long standing occult blood loss?)
Palmar erythema (red palms)
Hyperdynamic circulation due to increased oestrogen levels in liver disease. (Oestrogen is largely metabolised in the liver so reduced liver function increases circulating levels)
Sclerae
jaundice
Conjunctival pallor
anaemia re: bleeding
Glossitis/stomatitis
Iron/B12 deficiency
Aphthous ulcers
IBD
Inflamed virchows lymph node
(Gastric) malignancy
