Definition of a mental disorder
A
A mental disorder is defined in the DSM-5 (2013) as a syndrome pertaining to any form of abnormality in the behavioural, cognitive or emotion regulation patterns which causes significant distress and impairs the functioning of the individual in daily activities.

The essential feature of ADHD
A
A persistent pattern of inattention and/ or hyperactivity-impulsivity which is more frequent and severe than typical and interferes with the individual’s functioning namely in academic performance
- Symptoms appear before age 12, duration at least 6 months, in 2 or more settings
