Exam Revision Flashcards
Why is the genetic code described as universal?
The same triplet codes code for the same amino acids.
Why would a mutation in an intron not affect the protein produced?
Introns are non coding,
so are not translated.
Why is a myelinated neurone faster than a non myelinated one?
There is only depolarisation at the nodes.
So the impulse jumps from node to node
Impure doesn’t travel along the whole node length.
How does glycogen lead to a lowering of blood glucose concentration?
Causes glucose levels in liver to fall
So they are lower than in the blood plasma
Creates a glucose diffusion gradient
Glucose enters the cell via facilitated diffusion
What is the function of phosphocreatine?
It provides phosphate to make ATP.
What is a transcription factor?
A protein molecule
Which moves from the cytoplasm to the DNA
binds to the promoter region and blocks mRNA production.
How does a DNA probe work?
Probe sequence complementary to target DNA
Forms base pairs/hydrogen binds with complementary DNA.
So only this DNA shows the probe trait e.g. Luminescence.
