8
Q

What needs to be considered when creating an app for advertising?

A

It must be properly OPTIMIZED - images must be optimized in order for them to load quickly on a webpage, and to keep the overall app size down.

Also, the amount of bandwidth available to the average phone user - will they have WiFi or 3G? This could impact the level of detail etc. on the webpages, so that download/load times are kept to a minimum.

12
Q

What are the advantages/disadvantages of .jpg compression?

A

Advantages:
Compressed size makes it useful for storing high quality images such as photographs (as it can hold more than 256 colours - unlike .gif compression).

Disadvantages:
Some image quality is lost due to compression.

13
Q

What are the advantages/disadvantages of .gif compression?

A

Advantages:
Good for images that have large blocks of a single colour. Can also have a transparent background, making it useful for placing on webpages etc.

Disadvantages:
Cannot hold more than 256 different colours, so images with more than 256 colours lose quality quickly.

Q

What are the advantages/disadvantages of .bmp compression?

A

Advantages:
Bit-mapped files are useful if the picture is being stored for later use, as the picture still retains its quality.

Disadvantages:
Due to large file size, they are not suitable for websites - as they drastically increase the overall load time.

Q

What is a Vector Graphic?

A

It is a graphic that is based on the ‘relationships between the control points of lines’ - i.e. information is not stored about each pixel, but where the lines are in the image. This allows vector images to be zoomed in indefinitely and not lose their quality.

16
Q

What are the advantages/disadvantages of Vector Graphics?

A

Advantages:
Smaller file size, as data is not stored about each pixel.
Vector Graphics are scalable without a drop in quality.

Disadvantages:
They do not look as lifelike/realistic as bit-mapped images. They will always look computer generated.

17
Q

Why is a Graphics Tablet better than a Mouse?

A

It is more accurate/precise than a mouse, and so offers greater control. It is more ergonomic, so there is less chance of RSI etc. in the future. Also, it uses a stylus/pen shaped tool, so the ‘experience’ is more realistic.

18
Q

Name two methods of collaboratively sharing data and files:

A
  1. Network Shared Area.

2. Cloud based service - i.e. Dropbox.

19
Q

What is the ‘aim’ of the Data Protection Act?

A

To protect your personal data stored on others computers.

20
Q

What are the 6 main principles of the DPA (1998)?

A
  1. It must only be collected and used fairly and within the law.
  2. It must only be held and used for the reasons given to the Information Commissioner.
  3. It can only be used for those registered purposes and only be disclosed to those people mentioned in the register entry. You cannot give it away or sell it unless you said you would to begin with.
  4. It must be accurate and be kept up to date. There is a duty to keep it up to date, for example to change an address when people move.
  5. It must not be kept longer than is necessary for the registered purpose. It is alright to keep information for certain lengths of time but not indefinitely. This rule means that it would be wrong to keep information about past customers longer than a few years at most.
  6. The information must be kept safe and secure. This includes keeping the information backed up and away from any unauthorized access. It would be wrong to leave personal data open to be viewed by just anyone.
21
Q

What is a Radio Button on a Data Capture Form?

A

It is similar to a check box, in that it contains a number of different values to choose from. However, only one value can be chosen (unlike a checkbox, where multiple values can be chosen).

22
Q

How do businesses protect data?

A
  1. Usernames/Passwords
  2. A good Password Policy
  3. Setting Access Rights effectively
  4. Firewalls (checks all data entering/exiting a network)
  5. Backing up data to external HDD’s etc.
  6. Encrypting files.
  7. Physical Security (i.e. CCTV, locked doors, security guards).
23
Q

What makes a good password?

A
Mixtures of CaSe
Symbols and Characters (@~#\)
Longer than 8 characters
Changed regularly
Not directly relatable to you (i.e. not the name of your cat)
24
Q

What makes a bad password?

A
One word/simple
All one case
Something which relates to you
One which is written down
Never changed
25
Q

What does the Copyright and Patents Act (1998) do?

A

It stops people claiming others work as their own (for example copying software, photos and videos without permission).

26
Q

How are you able to use Copyrighted material?

A

If the owner grants you permission to use their work.

27
Q

What happens if someone uses a copyrighted image without permission?

A

It is illegal, so the owner could start legal action against them.

28
Q

What can happen to the owner of copyrighted material if someone uses it without permission?

A
  1. Loss of Earnings
  2. Loss of employment
  3. High legal fees for prosecuting offenders
29
Q

What must someone do if they wish to use a copyrighted image?

A
  1. Check if the photo/image is under copyright, or if it is copyright free/under a CC license
  2. Seek permission to use the image from the owner
  3. Acknowledge the owner of the image in their work
  4. Pay a fee if requested
  5. Find out if there are any copyright conditions associated with the image, which can govern its overall use.
30
Q

What is the main advantage of wired data transfer?

A

It is the most secure type.

31
Q

When is wireless transfer useful?

A

If data is not that important, and security is not an issue.

32
Q

When is it worth sending files by mobile data transfer (i.e. 3G etc)

A

When data is not important, when security is not an issue, and when the file size is small (as the data transfer speed of mobile networks are slow).

33
Q

When is it useful to send files over email/cloud based services?

A

When security is not an issue. Email is more suited to small files, whereas Cloud Storage is more suited to large files.

34
Q

When is P2P/Torrent file transfer useful?

A

When security is not an issue, as torrents are very insecure. Also, they are useful when one file needs to be shared between lots of people.

35
Q

What do you need to think about when choosing a data transfer method?

A
  1. The importance of the data (does the transfer need to be secure etc.?)
  2. How big is the file? (If it is 100GB+, then it is unlikely that the best transfer method will be over a mobile network…)
36
Q

What can cause eye strain/headaches, and how can this be prevented?

A

Sitting to close to a monitor, bad lighting in work area, spending too much time looking at monitor. This can be prevented by sitting a distance away from the monitor, having decent lighting, and taking regular breaks (15 mins every hour).

37
Q

What can cause RSI, and how can it be prevented?

A

Caused by repeated movement of wrists and fingers over a long period of time. Can be prevented by taking 5 minute breaks every hour, and by using keyboard rests/mouse supports.

38
Q

What can cause back problems, and how can they be prevented?

A

They are caused by sitting in an awkward position at a computer. This can be prevented by keeping good posture and/or using a back rest. An adjustable monitor can be used, so you don’t have to bend your neck.

39
Q

What 6 things does an employer have to provide under the Health and Safety Act (1974)?

A
  1. Provide tiltable screens
  2. Provide adjustable chairs
  3. Pay for appropriate eye and eyesight tests by an optician
  4. Provide anti-glare monitor filters
  5. Make sure lighting is suitable
  6. Plan work at a computer so there a frequent breaks
