What are the 4 functions of the respiratory system?
Delivering air to lungs, supply blood with oxygen, returning ‘old air’ back to environment, creating speech
What happens to the diaphragm, ribs and lungs during breathing?
When you breathe in, diaphragm contracts downwards, ribs expands outwards, lungs get bigger.
When you breathe out, diaphragm relaxes, moves upwards, ribs go inwards, lungs get smaller.
Explain gaseous exchange.
The process of oxygen and carbon dioxide moving between lungs + blood.
Diffusion occurs when substances move from area of high concentration to low.
What is respiratory rate?
No. of breaths per min , increases when you exercise.
What is tidal volume?
Amount of air inhaled/exhaled per breath , increases when you exercise.
What is carb loading?
Eating a lot of carb foods to increase energy. (Marathon runners)

Low GI: slow energy releasing
Mod GI: mod energy releasing
High GI: fast energy releasing

What are carb gels?
Dehydrated sports drinks with concentrated carbs
Difference between hypertonic, hypotonic, isometric drinks?
Hypertonic gives body extra energy.
Hypotonic gives body extra hydration.
Isotonic gives body energy and hydration.
What is protein supplementation? Who would use it?
Muscle growth and repair , bodybuilders and weightlifters.
What do hypoxia masks do?
Limit oxygen while training so that when they take it off they have produced more red blood cells.
What are steroids?
Used to increase muscle bulk, power and strength.
What is blood doping?
When an athlete ejects blood, stores it in a fridge and later reinfuses. This increases amount of red blood cells.
What is the cardiovascular system made of?
Heart, blood vessels, blood
What are the characteristics of arteries?
Carry blood away from the heart.
What are the characteristics of veins?
Carry blood to the heart.
What are the characteristics of capillaries?
Links arteries with veins
What are the purpose of valves?
Prevent backflow of blood.
