Anecdotal lead

Vignette Lead
Personal story (narrative tone) that leads into politics, economy, social conditions, and other major issues MORE THAN 1 PARA
Descriptive lead
describes the story setting/gives details leading up to the story, can include dialogue
Direct address lead
speaks directly to the reader and uses the pronoun ‘you’ or ‘your’; reverts to third person; informal- tries to make the reader feel involved in the story
Direct Quotation Lead
rarely used; only works if the quote is brief because readers won’t typically read a long quote to start
Question Lead
rarely used; do not give a yes or no question
Comparison Lead
time comparison leads, size comparison leads, etc
Novelty/Oddity lead
More creative, often humorous, good at attracting readers because they are different
Blind lead
refers to a number of people, but saves names for later
News Summary lead
does not answer all of the readers questions; gives the main point, but also leads them into the rest of the story
