Q

What are the 2 parts of the law of reflection

Optics - 11

A
  1. The angle of incidence is always equal to the angle of reflection
  2. The incident ray, reflected ray, and the normal all lie in the same plane

Q

What are the 2 rules of refraction

Optics - 12.1

A
  1. The incident ray, the refracted ray, and the normal all lie in the same plane. The incident ray and the refracted ray are on opposite sides of the line that separates the 2 media.
  2. Light bends towards the normal when the speed of light in the 2nd medium is less than the speed of light in the 1st medium. Light bends away from the normal when the speed of light in the medium is faster.

Q

When does total Internal Reflection occur

A
  1. Light is traveling more slowly in the first medium than in the 2nd
  2. The angle of incidence is large enough that no refraction occurs in the 2nd medium. Instead the ray is reflected back into the 1st medium.
