2
Q
What are the different types of light (8)
optics - 11
A
- Incandescence - fire
- Electric Discharge - lightning
- Chemiluminescence - chem reaction
- Bioluminescence - animals
- Fluorescent - highlighters
- Phosphorescence - glow in the dark
- Triboluminescence - crystals
- Light Emitting Dial (LED)
3
Q
What are the 2 parts of the law of reflection
Optics - 11
A
- The angle of incidence is always equal to the angle of reflection
- The incident ray, reflected ray, and the normal all lie in the same plane
4
Q
What is refraction
Optics - 12.1
A
the bending or change in direction of light when it travels from one medium to another
* Whenever light travels from one medium to another
5
Q
What are the 2 rules of refraction
Optics - 12.1
A
- The incident ray, the refracted ray, and the normal all lie in the same plane. The incident ray and the refracted ray are on opposite sides of the line that separates the 2 media.
- Light bends towards the normal when the speed of light in the 2nd medium is less than the speed of light in the 1st medium. Light bends away from the normal when the speed of light in the medium is faster.
6
Q
What is the index of refraction
optics - 12
A
the ratio of speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in a medium
7
Q
What is the critical Angle
optics - 12.5
A
The angle of incidence that results in an angle of refraction of 90॰
8
Q
When does total Internal Reflection occur
A
- Light is traveling more slowly in the first medium than in the 2nd
- The angle of incidence is large enough that no refraction occurs in the 2nd medium. Instead the ray is reflected back into the 1st medium.
