Q

Identify and fully justify the inferential statistical test that you used when analysing the data collected in your experiment. [4]

A

Mann-Whitney U is an appropriate test because the level of measurement is at least ordinal - sleep quality score. The experimental design is independent groups because the participants are sorted by age, group 1 being older participants, 12-18 and group 2 being younger participants, 40-60. Participants are then only tested under that condition. The study was a test of difference because we looked at the impact of age on sleep quality.

Q

Identify and fully justify the inferential statistical test that you used when analysing the data collected in your correlation. [4]

A

Spearman’s Rank Order is an appropriate test because the level of measurement is at least ordinal. It considers the relationship between the two co-variables age and speed so it’s a correlation. It also identifies that the two co-variables are related – age in years and speed difference in seconds.

Q

Explain how you operationalised “sleep” in your experiment. [2]

A

Sleep quality was ranked with a number based on the answers given by participants. We used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scoring system to do this. The PSQI scoring system involves seven components which leaves participants a score that can be compared with other participants. If our participants had a score higher than 7, their sleep quality was considered poor.
