Describe the role of mitosis [3 marks]
Mitosis is the process of cell division whereby a parent cell produces two genetically identical daughter cells [1 mark] Mitosis has functions in the growth of an organism through the production of cells [1 mark] Mitosis can also be used to repair damaged tissues, by producing new cells to replace those that have been damaged or destroyed [1 mark]
Explain which process must occur in a cell during interphase before mitosis can take place [3 marks]
During interphase, protein synthesis occurs to produce the enzymes required for DNA replication [1 mark] The cell replicates its DNA so that 2 complete sets of DNA are contained in the cell, ready for mitosis [1 mark] The organelles of the cell, such as the mitochondria, are also replicated [1 mark]
