Q

What are the advantages and disadvantages of an axial flow pump? Where would this type of pump be used?

A

They are rugged and can operate in a multitude of applications requiring the movement of a high volume of water at a low discharge pressure. They also have the smallest of the dimensions among many of the conventional pumps.
Often used for raw water cooling, dewatering, and the
rapid transfer of ballast water for adjustment of heel or trim.

Q

In reference to emergency power, what must be fitted to every ship?

A

Every ship must be fitted with a self-contained emergency source of electrical power and the
power supplied by this source must be sufficient to supply all those services deemed essential for
the safe operation of the vessel. This source of power and it’s associated components (e.g. switchboard) must be placed in a dedicated space located above the freeboard deck, aft of the forward collision bulkhead and must be capable of being accessed from an open deck, in case of fire inside the vessel.

Q

What two (2) sources of power may be used in an emergency? What are the rules for energizing the emergency switchboard?

A

Either a generator or a bank of batteries.
If emergency power is supplied by a generator, the generator must be driven by a suitable prime mover (diesel engine) with its own independent supply of fuel. Fuel is supplied from a tank located adjacent to the generator which is kept filled at all times. In the event of a blackout, the generator must be capable of starting automatically and energizing the emergency circuits in less than 45 seconds. If emergency power is supplied by a bank of batteries, they must energize the emergency circuits instantaneously.

Q

How long must an emergency source of power be supplied to the vessels essential safety systems?

A

For passenger vessels or for vessels carrying passengers (e.g. ferries or RO/RO vessels) the power must be supplied for a period of no less than 36 hours. For cargo vessels and most other vessels this period is 12 hours.

Q

Where would laser, thermal, and flame detectors be used?

A

Laser detectors are very sensitive to smoke, and can be up to 100 times more sensitive than a conventional photoelectric detector. Would be good for areas where the fire can flash rapidly without much smoke.
