Warlpiri Ceremony

A
  • 12-16 year old boys are taken from their mothers and painted with red ochre; a belt woven of human hair is tied to their waist
  • They are taken on a journey to different communities
  • Women dance and cry at the child who will return as a man
  • The men perform various dances associated with the dreaming
  • The boys are taken to the bush and shown a series of sacred ceremonies and then kept in seclusion
  • All- night ceremonies are performed, and the boys are painted with white clay and join the initiates, later to be decorated with vegetable down; women and children are covered from viewing
  • Boys are painted with white ochre and demonstrate what they have learnt to their mothers
  • The boys are circumcised marking their transition
