Kinship
“the completeness of the oneness”
- determined by family, tribes and relationships, creates connections with lang, dreaming and ancestori spirits
- land, dancing, raising children, ceremonies, hunting parties (kanyini, totems and ancestrial beings) -> metaphysical connection of dreaming kinship
Ceremonial Life
roles in ceremonial life: 1. rites of passage 2. passing on social information 3. personal connections 4. spiritual connections Aboriginal people - land - identity - acknowledge a creation event - show the metaphysical presence of dreaming world in real world
Obligations to land and people
- inextricably connected
1. land is physical medium (resting place for ancestorial beings)
2. rituals are connected to sacred sites (called balance rites)
3. land is meeting point (where tribes derive identity and relationships)
Warlpiri Ceremony
- 12-16 year old boys are taken from their mothers and painted with red ochre; a belt woven of human hair is tied to their waist
- They are taken on a journey to different communities
- Women dance and cry at the child who will return as a man
- The men perform various dances associated with the dreaming
- The boys are taken to the bush and shown a series of sacred ceremonies and then kept in seclusion
- All- night ceremonies are performed, and the boys are painted with white clay and join the initiates, later to be decorated with vegetable down; women and children are covered from viewing
- Boys are painted with white ochre and demonstrate what they have learnt to their mothers
- The boys are circumcised marking their transition
