Exam One Flashcards
What are the lifespan principles?
Development is lifelong, multidirectional, multicontextual, multidimensional, multidisciplinary, and organized by plasticity.
What are the three dimensions of the lifespan principle?
Physical, cognitive and psychosocial.
Lifespan principle of multicontextual influences?
Explain each one.
normative age graded, normative history graded, non-normative age graded.
Chronological Age
age in years
Biological age
how fast your body ages
Psychological age
adaptive capacity compared to someone of the same age
Name some historical theorists.
Locke, Gesell, Rousseau and Freud
What are some ways to conduct ethical research?
Must give consent, be informed and no harm should be done and also confidentiality
What is correlational research?
Finding patterns in the present variable and predicting the future based off of that.
What is experimental research?
When researcher manipulates variables to see the outcome.
Genotype v.s. Phenotype
Genotypes are all genes inherited and Phenotype are the genes that show. 46 v.s. 23
What is behavioral genetics?
Belief that environment has just as much impact on the genes than they do themselves. The study of genes and environments influence on behavior.
What is epigenetics?
modifications in DNA that affects the genes that show when the cell divides
What is a teratogen?
An environmental factor that causes birth defects.
What is the APGAR assessment?
Way to assess newborn. Conducted 1 minute and 5 mins after birth. Scored each category from 0-2. Assesses heart rate, respiration, reflex response, muscle tone, and color. score less than 5 a concern.
What is the NBAS?
Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale. Used if low APGAR score to assess newborn. Assesses motor development, muscle tone, and stress response.
Factors to influence teratogens effect
Number of teratogens, amount of exposure, sex, how many exposed, time of exposure, and genetics.
