Exam One Flashcards
Inferential statistics
Prediction of the population that uses information gathered from the sample
Descriptive Statistics
Numerical summary of the sample
Standard deviation
Spread or dispersion of the data. Tells distance of other observations in data around mean
Symmetric Data
Mean and median are equal
Negative Skew
Mean < median < mode
Positive Skew
Mode < median < mean
Empirical rule
For symmetric distributions, 95% of the data is between 2 standard deviations of the mean
Statistical Independence
When the occurrence of 1 event doesn’t affect the chances of other events
Or: P(A and B) = P(A)P(B)
Finding ‘and’ probabilities
Multiply the probabilities
Finding ‘or’ probabilities
P(A) + P(B) - P(A&B)
Permutation
Elements of a subset are listed in a specific order
Combination
Elements of the subset can be listed in any order
Factorial
Product of an integer and all the integers below it
Ex: factorial four (4!) = 24
