Q

What is the 802.1q VLAN identification method? How does it work?

A

Created by IEEE, a standard method of frame tagging. If trunking between a Cisco switched link and a different brand of switch, you have to use 802.1q.

It inserts field into the frame. That field contains the 12-bit VLAN ID. It identifies the VLAN and can carry information for 4094 VLANs.

Q

What is a router on a stick? What is it used for?

A

It is when you connect a LAN switch to a router with one Ethernet link configured as an 802.1q trunk link. Router performs inter-VLAN communications (routing between VLANs)
