What is an Information System
- Information systems collects, processes, stores, analyses and disseminates information for a specific purpose
What is a Computer based information system ?
- an information system that uses computer technology to perform some or all of its intended tasks. Although not all information systems are computerised, today most are.

What is Porter’s Value Chain Model
Primary Activities: Relate to production and distribution of the firm’s products and service, creating value for which customers are willing to pay
Inbound Logistics: quality control, receiving raw materials, control of materials & supply schedule
Operations: manufacturing, packaging, production control, quality control & maintenance
Outbound Logistics: fishing goods, order handling, dispatch, delivering & invoicing

- What is entity relationship modelling (ERM)?
Each entity has a table in the database and the columns and the attributes. The entity is an object and the attributes are the characteristics about the entity.
What is a database?
database management system that enables users to define, crease and maintain the database and also provide controlled access to this database.
What is a data warehouse?
a shared collection of logically related data designed to meet the information
What is an intranet?
users engage familiar applications and work habits. Support discovery (inexpensive browsing / search), communication and collaboration inside an organisation
What is an extranet?
connects parts of intranets to other PCs and/or intranets. Enables business partners / stakeholders to securely access internet content over the internet using virtual private networks.
What is an client/server computing?
divides processing work between two or more computers / nodes. Server computers provide the computing services and then the client computers the end user/s access these services
What is Business Intelligence?
a comprehensive, cohesive and integrated set of tools and processes used to capture, collect, integrate, store and analyse data with the purpose of generating and presenting information to support business decision making
What is data mining?
refers to the process of searching for valuable business info in large databases, data warehouses or data marts
What is OLAP
a computing method that enables users to easily and selectively extract and query data in order to analyse it from different points of view.
