Counselling is a talking therapy that involves a trained therapist listening to you and helping you find ways to deal with emotional issues.
Sometimes the term “counselling” is used to refer to talking therapies in general, but counselling is also a type of therapy in its own right

what is a counselling skill ?

A

Talulah gets upset with how tough her first year at college is going. Her teacher takes her aside and listens to her concerns, letting her do the talking. When finished, the teacher asks Talulah what she thinks the best course of action is. Talulah decides for herself what she will do.
This is not helping behaviour. It is also not counselling as the teacher is not a trained professional. Instead it is an individual displaying counselling skills.

what is confidentiality ?

A

Confidentiality is the concept of keeping clients personal details and experiences private and out of reach of unauthorised individuals or groups.
A counsellor must gain the clients permission first if they are to discuss the case with their Supervisor.
A therapeutic client who knows that personal, private and intimate information he/she shares with a counsellor or psychotherapist is held in confidence is more likely to feel at ease about self-disclosure.
The client will also feel more able to trust their counsellor, and will want to open up and discuss their issues, concerns and difficulties more readily.
Without this level of patient confidentiality the client-counsellor relationship has no firm foundation.
If details are kept on a computer, this must be completely secure and not easily accessible to unauthorised individuals.
If it is offline, a counsellor should have a secure filing cabinet that only he/she has access to.
If notes are taken, efforts must be made to not include any identifiable
characteristics like a name or address.
Essentially, creating a sense of confidentiality will foster trust in the relationship which is crucial for the client to make honest disclosures.
