Hunter-gatherer
Humans who obtain their food from nature by hunting animals and gathering wild plants.
Hunter-gatherer Lifestyle
- Only provided the amount of food needed for the people to survive.
- Food available was natural and therefore they were mobile, moving on whenever the food supplies in the area were exhausted.
Hunter-gatherer Challenges
- Dramatic changes in climate.
- Starvation on low food supply.
Mbuti Pygmies
Mbuti Pygmies inhabit the Congo rainforests of Africa.
Living in village groups called bands or kinship groups.(7-30 families) who each have their own hut. Both women and men gather and forage for food. The women make the nets for hunting and the baskets for carrying. Hunting is usually done in groups of men, even though both genders assist on the capture.
Food Culture
All countries throughout the world have their own particular culture. The term culture refers to the shared or patterns of behaviour or identity of a group of people.This includes the characteristics, customs, and knowledge of the group and is based on their language, religion, ideas, social behaviour, food, music and arts.
Food Cuisine
Cuisine is part of our culture. It is the style of preparation and cooking that reflects a particular country. It is based on the ingredients, cooking techniques, and traditional dishes of the group which has been developed over time.
Early use of Spices
Used for:
- medicines
- fight spirits
- flavouring food
- perfume
- heal wounds
- fresh breath when speaking to the emperor(Chinese)
- syrups
Silk Road
An overland route that linked Eastern nations with those of the Mediterranean. It was established during the Han Dynasty which allowed goods to be transported from china to India and on to the Roman Empire.
Spice Trading
Pepper, Cinnamon, Nutmeg and cloves were such valuable condiments 5 centuries ago that it drove nations to sail across oceans and different routes to the spice rich countries. Trading spices helped to establish cast empires as well as make merchants rich. In the 5th century spices including tiger and white Pepper were 25% payable of duty.
Globalisation
Globalisation is the process by which the world has become interconnected as a result of increased trade ad cultural exchange.
Impact of Globalisation
Refers not only to the actual movement of trade but the ability to move food comedies, investment, finance and labour across national borders. The quest of spices being one of the first drivers. Spices created the routes of trade which later other trading goods have followed in their path.
