exam 4 Flashcards
Ageism
When someone treats others unfairly because of their age
Elderspeak
When people talk to older adults in a way that’s too simple or babyish
Young-old
People in the early stages (60’s and 70’s) of old age who are still active, healthy, and independent.
Old-old
Later stage of old age (80’s), where people may have more health issues and need more assistance with daily activities.
Life Span
Longest amount of time someone or something can live. 120 years for humans.
Life expectancy
How long, on average, someone is expected to live based on where they live and other factors.
Median Age
Age that divides a population into two equal halves: half the people are older than this age, and half are younger.
Procedural Memory
How your brain remembers doing things automatically, like riding a bike or tying your shoes, without needing to think too much about it.
Semantic Memory
Long-term memory: Brain’s storage for facts and general knowledge about the world, like knowing capitals or what things are without personal experiences attached.
Episodic Memory
Personal diary in your brain. It’s the part of memory that stores specific personal experiences and events, like your first day of school or a birthday party.
Socioemotional Selectivity Theory
Tend to focus more on relationships that make them happy and fulfilled. They prioritize close connections rather than trying to meet lots of new people.
Ego Integrity
Feeling content with your life when you look back. It’s a sense of acceptance and satisfaction, not regret, as you reflect on your experiences and choices.
Despair
Feeling regret or disappointment about your life when you’re older. It’s about looking back with a sense of dissatisfaction or missed opportunities.
Life Review
It’s when you think about your past, remember important moments, and think about what they mean to you. It’s like putting together the story of your life and finding what matters most to you.
Reminiscence
Recalling or thinking about past experiences, events, or memories. It’s like taking a mental stroll down memory lane, remembering things that happened earlier in your life.
Midlife Crisis
When people feel stressed or unhappy about their life in their middle years and might want big changes.
Selective optimization with compensation (SOC)
Picking what’s important, trying harder at those things, and finding new ways to manage anything that gets harder as you age.
Fluid Intelligence
Mastering something completely new within a time limit. (Begins to decline early in adult life)
Crystallized Intelligence
Accumulated knowledge (Can grow until later life [the 60s])
Sandwich Generation
Adults who are taking care of both their aging parents and their own children at the same time. They’re “sandwiched” between these two responsibilities, providing care and support to both older and younger generations simultaneously.
Involved Grandparents
Hands-on with their grandkids, spending time with them, helping out, and being there when needed.
