The glass ceiling: where an invisible Barrie through which the next level of advancement can be seen but cannot be reached by a section of qualified and deserving employees

How does ethnicity and race relate to poverty?
- low average earnings of certain ethnic groups can be attributed to racist and discriminatory employment and hiring practices
How does physical and mental disability relate to poverty?
- people with disabilities are generally excluded from participating in mainstream society
- face prejudice and discrimination - hard for then to find work
tipping point
When an idea or behaviours becomes popular enough, it reaches it’s tipping point creating a social epidemic
Social paradigm shift
When a new set if ideals, beliefs and values becomes strong enough to affect and change the way individuals see and perforce reality.
School of thought
A certain way if interpreting a disciplines subject matter that had gained widespread credibility
Agent of socialization
A person or institution that shapes an individuals social development
Social stratification
The division/ separation I people, religion, class, sexual orientation
Meritocracy
We earn out rewards through personal merit
Wealth
The economic resources possessed by an individual or group
Absolute poverty
The deprivation if resources that are considered essential: enough food, fresh water, a safe place to live
Participant observation
A method if study in which anthropologists live with their subjects for a long time, participate as a group or community member and record their observations
Gender identity
A persons sense of their own gender
Egocentrism
A natural restriction on out perception caused by the fact that we can only see the world from out own perspective
