EXAM 3 PREP Flashcards
Name the 5 functions of roots in the angiosperm body
1- growth
2- reproduction (by
vegetative propagation)
3. Acquisition of nutrients from the soil
4. Storage
- Anchorage
define meristems and their main function
- In plants, new cells for growth are produced
in specific locations - undifferentiated cells that divide to
produce new cells which later differentiate
into specific structures
name 2 types of meristems and their function
Apical meristems:
→ Produce growth that lengthens plant
structures.
→ Found at the tips of plant structures.
Lateral meristems:
→ Produce growth that widens plant
structures.
→ Found as rings of tissue inside the plant.
Two major kinds of angiosperm
monocots : 1 cotyledon
and
eudicots (dicots): 2 cotyledons
name some differences between monocots and dicots; seed leaves, leaf veins, stems, flowers, roots
MONOCOTS:
seed leaves 1 cotyledon
leaf veins parallel
stems vascular bundles in scattered arrangement
flowers floral parts in multiple of 3
roots fibrous root system
DICOTS:
seed leaves 2 cotyledons
leaf veins branched
stems vascular bundles in ring formation
flowers floral parts in multiples of 4
roots taproot present
random info about angiosperms (flowering plants)
- most recent type of plant to evolve.
- Presently the most dominant
kind of plant due to coevolution with pollinators
2 main systems in the angiosperm body
- shoot system
-root system
