Exam 3 (PDF pages 43-62) Flashcards
Most malignant bone tumors are metastatic….
carcinomas
True/false: sarcomas often hemorrhage and metastasize early?
true
what are the characteristics of malignant bone tumors? (general)
-bone destruction/lysis
-irregular, ragged, frayed margins of the lesion/poor zone of transition
-cortical erosion + destruction
-soft tissue masses may be present in adjacent area
-irregular “cloud” of increased bone density or lucent areas
-periosteal reactions
-systemic evidence of metastasis
-pain = moderate-severe
-alterations in blood chemistry
Which tumor is this?
-malignant mesenchymal tumor derived from fibrous CT
-invades long or flat bones (femur, tibia, mandible)
-involves periosteum and overlying muscle
-common age range is 30-50
-can produce a large soft tissue mass and present clinically w/ localized pain/swelling
Fibrosarcoma
which bone type is involves with 70% of fibrosarcoma cases
long bones (distal femur #1, proximal tibia #2)
-w/ metaphyseal lesions being the most common
-extension into the diaphysis or epiphysis is also common
what are the 4 primary malignant bone tumors/bone sarcomas
- multiple myeloma
- osteogenic sarcoma/osteosarcoma
- chondrosarcoma
- ewing’s tumor/ewing’s sarcoma
what is the most common primary malignant bone tumor
multiple myeloma
