Exam 3 Joints Flashcards
Sacroiliac Joint
Two Joints
Anterior synovial joint - auricular surface of the sacrum with the auricular surface of ilium
Posterior syndesmosis - sacral tuberosity to iliac tuberosity, interosseous, and posterior sacroiliac fibers are the syndesmosis
Movement: nutation and counter nutation
Pubic Symphysis
2nd cartilaginous joint with fibrocartilage interpubic disc
Articulating surfaces between the two symphysial surfaces of pubic bones with the fibrocartilage
Movement: none, except for childbirth
Sacrococcygeal symphysis
2nd cartilaginous joint with an intervertebral disc
Articulating surfaces - apex of the sacrum with base of coccyx
Movement: none, except for childbirth
Hip Joint
Ball and Socket Synovial joint
Articulating surfaces - acetabulum of hip bone with head of femur
Movement - All
Knee joint
Hinge Synovial Joint
3 articulations
2 femorotibial
Articulating surfaces - medial femoral condyle with medial tibial plateau; lateral femoral condyle with lateral tibial plateau
Movements: flex, ext, slight rotation during locking and unlocking
1 Femoropatellar
Articulating surfaces - patellar groove of femur with articular surface of the patella
Movement - Gliding
Superior tibiofibular Joint
plane synovial joint
Articulating surfaces: head of fibula with lateral condyle of tibia
Movement: very little
Tibiofibular Syndesmosis
Articulating surfaces: interosseous membrane connecting the shafts of the tibia and fibula; distal end of the fibula with the fibular notch of the tibia
Movements: slight movement during wedging of talus during dorsiflexion
Ankle Joint
Hinge synovial joint
Articulating surfaces: distal ends of tibia and fibula with talus
Movement: dorsiflexion and plantar flexion
Subtalar (Talocalcaneal) joint
plane synovial joint
Articulating surfaces: talus and calcaneus
Movement: slight gliding with dorsiflexion and plantarflexion, gliding with inversion/eversion
Calcaneocuboid Joint
Plane synovial joint
Articulating surfaces: calcaneus and cuboid
Movement: slight gliding during inversion and eversion dorsiflexion and plantar flexion
Talonavicular Joint
Ball and socket joint
Articulating surfaces: talus and navicular
Movement: slight gliding during inversion and eversion dorsiflexion and plantarflexion
Cuneonavicular Joint
Plane synovial joint
Articulating surfaces: 3 cuneiforms with navicular
Movement: very little
Tarsometatarsal Joint
Plane synovial joint
Articulating surfaces: bases of metatarsals with cuneiforms or cuboid
Movement: very little
MTP Joints
Condyloid synovial joints
Articulating surfaces: heads of metatarsals with base of proximal phalanges
Movements: flex, ext, add, abd, circumduction
IP Joint
Hinge synovial joints
Articulating surfaces -
IP joint of digit 1: head of proximal phalanx with base of distal phalanx
Proximal IP joint of digits 2-5 head of proximal phalange with base of middle phalange
Distal IP joints of digits 2-5: head of middle phalange with base of distal phalange
Movement: flex and extend
