Exam 3 (Eschatology) Flashcards
Define Death
Separation of what was never intended to be separated.
Three Types of Death
- Physical: Separation of material and immaterial (Jas. 2:26), Separation from life on this earth (Phil. 1:23-24), Cessation of bodily life until resurrection.
- Spiritual: Moral and personal separation from God (Eph. 2:1, 12).
- Eternal: Eternal confirmation of spiritual death (Rev. 20:12-14).
Define Intermediate State
State of existence between physical death and physical resurrection.
Views of Intermediate State
- Bodiless or borrowed-body existence: Spirits exist in a conscious state with sequence of moments without their resurrection bodies.
- Soul Sleep: The bodiless soul sleeps with Christ until the parousia.
- No Intermediate State: believers enter timeless eternity or cease to exist but are retained in God’s memory.
- Catholic View: three options–heaven (beatific vision), purgatory, or hell (limbo or hell proper).
Define Inaugurated Eschatology
God’s promised Messiah has come in the person of Jesus, inaugurating (beginning) the promised age of salvation. We have the first taste of a number of eschatological blessings. But the consummation and final fulfillment is yet future..
What is the reconciling kingdom program?
1) The dynamic activity of the sovereign, triune God 2) to manifest his authority in his sin-alienated creation, 3) by redeeming it from the domain of evil, 4) judging all enemies, 5) and bestowing the blessings of this beneficent reign 6) on and through his people 7) to the praise of his glory.
What are 5 attitudes Christians may have toward history?
- Triumphant: Gospel will prevail and the world will be Christianized.
- Transforming: Christians will penetrate society and Christianize its structures as part of the cultural mandate.
- Prophetic: As it proclaims the gospel and seeks to win people to Christ, the church proclaims righteousness in the culture by deed and word and exposes its evils in a context of grace.
- Ambivalent: If the proclamation of the gospel results in revival, society will improve as a secondary effect.
- Negative: Only Messiah can change society. We save people from the world (Satan’s domain) and bring them into the church community that practices the separation of church and state (lifeboat view).
Gerry’s definition of Heaven
Heaven is all about getting to be with Jesus, doing what He likes to do. It is totally light, full of brightness and color, completely real. We want to be there because He is there. We get to dwell in the personal presence of Someone who is infinitely greater than we will ever be and be with Him. To anyone but a lover of Jesus, this existence would be hell itself! For those who love Him, there could be no greater pleasure.
What are the key affirmations of heavenly existence?
- Eternal life in the presence of God.
- Unspeakable joy in God’s presence.
- Rest.
- Fulfillment of what we’ve always longed for.
- End of the curse.
- Humans will live as whole persons, not spirit beings.
Seven aspects of Kingdom of God in OT prophecy
- Spiritual: Salvation by grace begun with repentance and belief looking forward to renewal as a part of the new covenant.
- Moral/Ethical: Moral values will be affirmed and established in the lives of all humans worldwide.
- Social: Peace will be affirmed and justice will reign.
- Political: The righteous king will reign from a central capital over a regathered Israel through whom all the nations of the earth will be blessed.
- Physical: Both cosmic and geologic changes will occur (fruitfulness and health).
- Ecclesiastical: A group of people will be gathered in the name of Messiah over whom YHWH will be ruler, who will belong to him.
- Doxological: YHWH will be praised throughout the world.
