Exam 3 Ch 22 Flashcards
Stem Cells
What are stem cells defined by?
Their ability to self-renew and produce differentiated cells
Multipotent
Can become multiple types of differentiated cells
Unipotent
Can become one type of differentiated cell
What do Paneth cell secrete and why?
Wnt and to keep the crypt stem cells in a proliferative state
Satellite cells
Specialized myoblasts that reside as “stem cells” for skeletal muscle cells
What does a common lymphoid progenitor cell give rise to?
T cells
B cells
Nk cells
What does the common myeloid progenitor give rise to?
Macrophage and dendritic
Neutrophil, eosinophil, basophil
Mast cell
Megakaryocytes and platelets
Erythrocyte
What does Ephrin-Eph signaling do?
Drives segregation of the different gut cell types
What are the three defining properties of stem cells?
- They are NOT terminally differentiated
- They can divide without limit
- Each daughter cell has a choice to remain stemy or terminally differentiate
Planarian regeneration
-Grow in size when food is abundant
-Shrink in size when food is scarce
-Can regenerate from a single neoblast
Newt regeneration
Form a limb bud and the cells in the bud re-enter the cell cycle and de-differentiate
Then they proliferate and re-differentiate
What are the 4 factors needed for fibroblasts to be reprogrammed into iPS cells
OSKM
Oct4
Sox2
Kif4
Myc
What is G418 for?
It is to kill off any cells that do not express the resistance gene which is transcribed if the cell has been reprogrammed.
