EXAM 3 - Blood Disorders Pt 2 Flashcards
Major functions of plasma
Maintenance of blood volume
suspended cellular elements: RBCs, WBCs, PLTs
o2/co2
nutrient exchange
hormone transport
waste evacuation
temperature regulation
RBC Antigens
80 diff types of antigens on RBC
ABO
A antigens, B antigens or Neither =O
A and B dominant over O, but codominant with each other
Rh:
If present then Rh +
if not present then Rh-
**Positive is dominate over negative
Antibody vs antigen
***Antibody in PLASMA
***Antigens (A,B,AB, O) ON CELLS
Rh Factor
Rh:
If present then Rh +
if not present then Rh-
Cannot give + blood to - person. Antigen (rh factor) will develop antibodies and no work.
NEG can go to POS, but not POS to NEG
Blood Component Therapy
Transfusion:
Administration of whole blood or blood components directly into blood stream
Process regulated by federal government
Stringent requirements on collection, testing, storage and distribution
American Association of Blood banks
Transfusion Options
Homologous Blood:
collected from volunteer donors
Autologous Blood:
collected from intended recipient prior to planned procedures
Salvaged during surgery “cell saver”
eliminates risk of alloimmunization, immune mediated transfusion reactions and transmission of viral disease
Designated (directed) blood
Collected from donor: designated by recipient
