What is an EEG and why does a patient get one?
electroencephalogram: detects electrical activity in the brain. Diagnoses seizure disorders and can identify sleep disorders, and changes in behavior. Can be used to evaluate brain activity after HI or before a heart/liver transplant
Why is a lumbar puncture done and what can it diagnose?
- collects CSF for lab analysis, measure pressure of CSF, to inject spinal anesthetics/dye/chemo.
- can diagnose: meningitis, encephalitis, syphilis, bleeding, cancer, MS, Guillain-Barre syndrome
