Exam 3 Flashcards
Thyroid/Parathyroid glands
thyroid - follicles and cuboidal cells
parathyroid - cheif cells
Thyroid - Secretes thyroxine (controls metabolism and growth rates) and calcitonin (lowers blood calcium levels)
Parathyroid - Secretes parathyroid hormone (raises blood calcium levels)
24 hour chick
head folge
edge of amnion
notochord
somites (blocks of tissue lying on either side of the spinal chord)
blood islands
primative streak
Starfish Development
2-cell
4-cell
8-cell
blastula
gastrula
bipennaria larva
Taste bud
Chemoreceptors (gustatory) - sweet, sour, salt, and bitter
Hypophysis (Pituitary gland)
Anterior pituitary (darker area) - Secretes growth hormone (stimulates growth and metabolic functions), prolactin (stimulates milk production and secretion), follicle-stimulating hormone (stimulates sperm and ova production), luteinizing hormone (stimulates testes and ovaries), thyroid-stimulating hormone (stimulates thyroid gland), and adrenocorticotropic hormon (stimulates adrenal cortex to secrete steriod hormones and endorphins)
Posterior pituitary (lighter area) - Secretes oxytocin (stimulates contractions of the uterus and mammary gland cells) and antidiuretic hormone (promotes water retention in the kidneys)
Transitional epithelium
linings of ureter and urinary bladder that allows for strechability and recoiling
Spinal chord
Grey matter
White matter
Pancreas
Secretes insulin (lowers blood glucose levels), glucagon (raises glucose levels), and somatostatin (inhibits release of insulin and glucagon)
Graafian Follicle
antrum - Ovarian follicle that fills up with liquid
granulosa/follicle cells - a somatic cell of the sex cord that is closely associated with the developing female gamete (called an oocyte or egg) in the ovary of mammals
corona radiata - The corona radiata is the innermost layer of the cumulus oophorus and is directly adjacent to the zona pellucida, the outer protective layer of the ovum; purpose in many animals is to supply vital proteins to the cell
egg - oocyte
zona pellucida - a glycoprotein membrane surrounding the plasma membrane of an oocyte; responsible for sperm-binding
16 hour chick
Primitive streak (primitive folds + primitive groove)
Adrenal Gland
cortex and medulla
Secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine (mediate responses sressful situations), corticosteroids (control carbohydrate and protein metabolism), and aldosterone (controls blood pressure)
Human Penis
Corpus cavernosa - contains 2 of these chambers; engorge with blood to maintain erection
Corpus spongiosum - contains 1; also fils with blood and immediately surrounds urethra
Dense irregular connective tissue - “filter” tissue which surrounds the corpi corpuses
Testis
Spermatozoa - sperm cell
Lumen - The cavity or channel
Leydig - interstitial cells of the mammalian testis, involved in synthesis of testosterone
48 hour chick
Eye
brain
ear
heart
somites
viteline blood vessels
