Jean Baptiste Lully
Worked for French monarch (Louis XIV). considered THE most famous composer of French Baroque music (even though he wasn’t French at all). Had exclusive rights to publish opera music in France for many years. Wrote many dance numbers exclusively for the king.

- Born into a family of musicians
- Worked as composer and organist at English court and Westminster Abbey

- English-language opera not popular in England until after Purcell’s time
