Big Daddy Rice
Thomas Dartmouth, known for playing Jim Crow, popularized black minstrel on American stages.
Black Minstrel Show
Big Daddy Rice was known for this, whites painted their face black, aka blackface and made fun of and degrated the african americans.
Brown v. Board of Education
civil rights movement, ruled the separation of whites and blacks unconstitutional. Over turned Pleasy v. Ferguson.
Cakewalk
It started off as an imitation of dances done in Europe. Mimicked upper class society. African Americans traveled throughout Europe in this competition. Winner would get cake, thats where “it takes the cake” originated from.
Calenda
1700’s, first dance to start in Congo Square, problematic dance because of leg flapping and pelvic thrusting, outsiders didn’t like it, similar to the Ghost Dance, it originated from the Caribbean.
Capoeira
Started in Brazil. Dance/Martial Arts/ Acrobatics, lots of air bound movements. Slaves used it to do it to disguise fighting. White pants and colorful belts

Carnival
Pre lent even that started in Europe but moved to Brazil.Big parade at the end of the week. Ran from Friday-Tuesday and ending on Ash Wednesday.
Cats Corner
N.E. corner of the Savoy Ballroom. Better dancers would dance there, and they would kinda compete against each other, V.I.P section.
Charleston
1920’s dance craze came out of “Running Wild.” Whites saw the dance and wanted to learn it. Up and Down town Charleston.
Condomble
Religious practice in Brazil by slaves from the Yoruba tribe, oral tradition no holy scripture, dance to honor the Gods, Everyone had their own Orixas, possessed the dancers, no good or bad dancing.
Congo Square
500-600 slaves would gather on Sundays. It was supposed to help take back their cultural identity. It was a big deal to the people who visited that the slaves were unsupervised.
Diaspora
Group of people who are scattered and are moved from place to place. Ex. Slave trade
Harlem Renaissance
Harlem, NY, aka the Negro Movement, music, art and literature coming out of the neighborhood

Swing dance is an umbrella term, Lindy was a type of swing that was popular in the 30’s and 40’s. Came out of the Charleston.

William Henry Lane, got on the Black minstrel show because of his patting juba, juba evolved to tap and irish step dancing,
Middle Passage
Slaves trip to the U.S. after making a stop at another destination. Many slaves died during this leg of the voyage because of close quarters and disease.
Orixas
Gods of the Condomble religion. Dances dedicated to them.
Pleasy v. Ferguson
Separate but equal, later overturned by Brown v. Board of Education.
Samba Schools
Dance schools that prepared dancers for the pararde for Carnival. They have many dance practices.
Savoy Ballroom
Medium sized ballroom, no segregation policy.
Slavery Laws
Slaves moved to free states were still property of their owners.
Step Dancing
Dancing that focused on patting, stomping, chanting and clapping.
Treme
Oldest African American neighborhood. Emancipated slaves could buy a new beginning there.
William Henry Lane
Master Juba, known for going on the Black Minstrel Show for the patting juba, he toured Europe.
Buddy Dean Show
All white dance show and once a month allowed black dancers to come on. He canceled the show in 1964 rather then integrating the show.
