Thomas Dartmouth, known for playing Jim Crow, popularized black minstrel on American stages.
Black Minstrel Show
Big Daddy Rice was known for this, whites painted their face black, aka blackface and made fun of and degrated the african americans.
Brown v. Board of Education
civil rights movement, ruled the separation of whites and blacks unconstitutional. Over turned Pleasy v. Ferguson.
Cakewalk
It started off as an imitation of dances done in Europe. Mimicked upper class society. African Americans traveled throughout Europe in this competition. Winner would get cake, thats where “it takes the cake” originated from.
Calenda
1700’s, first dance to start in Congo Square, problematic dance because of leg flapping and pelvic thrusting, outsiders didn’t like it, similar to the Ghost Dance, it originated from the Caribbean.
Capoeira
Started in Brazil. Dance/Martial Arts/ Acrobatics, lots of air bound movements. Slaves used it to do it to disguise fighting. White pants and colorful belts

Pre lent even that started in Europe but moved to Brazil.Big parade at the end of the week. Ran from Friday-Tuesday and ending on Ash Wednesday.
Cats Corner
N.E. corner of the Savoy Ballroom. Better dancers would dance there, and they would kinda compete against each other, V.I.P section.
Charleston
1920’s dance craze came out of “Running Wild.” Whites saw the dance and wanted to learn it. Up and Down town Charleston.
Condomble
Religious practice in Brazil by slaves from the Yoruba tribe, oral tradition no holy scripture, dance to honor the Gods, Everyone had their own Orixas, possessed the dancers, no good or bad dancing.
Congo Square
500-600 slaves would gather on Sundays. It was supposed to help take back their cultural identity. It was a big deal to the people who visited that the slaves were unsupervised.
Diaspora
Group of people who are scattered and are moved from place to place. Ex. Slave trade
